A Strange Loop is a one-act musical with book, music, and lyrics by Michael R. Jackson, which plays eight weekly performances at the Barbican for 1 hour and 40 minutes. The show follows the story of Usher, a Black, queer man who is writing a musical black queer man. Moreover, the musical reflects on Usher’s experiences as a young Black queer boy growing up in a religious family, dealing with self-doubt and societal pressures. The title, A Strange Loop refers to that part where he is trapped in a spiral of self-doubt.
